Commentary

The Good-One/Ace of Hearts BBQ Specialties makes charcoal cookers and also sell lump charcoal for their cookers. It is interesting to note that the back of the bag contains information about their cookers and none about their charcoal. This bag was sent to us by one of our readers, having bought it at a Price Chopper store. We don't have any information about country of origin or types of woods used to make this charcoal, but it is almost certainly made from American hardwoods.

The bag contains a mix of pieces that lean to the small side. There were no pieces you could really call large, but there was a large amount of medium and what we'll call "medium to small" pieces. We'd like to see a bit more medium to large pieces, but overall the distribution wasn't too bad. As you can see in the following table, the chips and dust were a low 7.0% of the bag:

Large 0.0 pounds 0.0%
Medium 7.2 pounds 34.8%
Small 12.0 pounds 58.1%
Chips/Dust 1.5 pounds 7.0%

Total 20.7 pounds

The charcoal was very easy to light, taking 2.5 sheets to start in our chimney starter test. There was no sparking or popping while it was burning in the chimney starter, and the smell was the typical American hardwood smoke smell.

This charcoal burned at 1030 degrees in our maximum temperature test, which ranks high compared to other charcoals. When the fire was coming up to temperature, it spread rapidly as you would expect in light of the ease in starting this charcoal. Again there was no sparking or popping while the charcoal was burning full blast. Also, there was very little sparking and popping when starting with a MAPP torch, but of course exercise care when using a torch to start lump charcoal.

The charcoal burn time was high compared other charcoals and the ash produced was low. We have no trouble giving this charcoal our "Recommended" rating.
