Introduction

Back in 2015, we reviewed the original Kick Ash Basket and the upgraded heavier duty basket that subsequently came out when it became clear that the original basket wasn't holding up to the rigors of very hot fires. Since then, Kick Ash Basket has further upgraded baskets to heavy duty electropolished (more about that later) stainless steel. Also, they have since come out with the Kick Ash Can, a device that sits in the bottom of your cooker collecting ash, so you can lift it out and dump the ash rather than having to scrape ash out through your lower vent. We quickly grew weary of trying to scrape ash out of a Big Green Egg MiniMax cooker through its tiny lower vent, so we decided it was time for us to try out the new Kick Ash Basket and Kick Ash Can for the Big Green Egg MiniMax cooker.

Specifications and Features

For the Kick Ash Can:
  • 7.88" top inside diameter
  • 8.75" top outside diameter
  • 1.5" depth
  • 7.63" bottom diameter
  • Metal thickness 0.8mm
  • Made from electropolished stainless steel

For the Kick Ash Basket:
  • 10.0" top diameter
  • 9.0" bottom diameter
  • 2.25" basket depth
  • 3.62" overall height
  • Basket wires 6.0mm
  • Handle wires 4.5mm
  • Made from electropolished stainless steel

What Is Electropolishing?
The Kick Ash Can and Kick Ash Basket are both made from electropolished stainless steel. Frankly, we must admit that this was a new term for us, so what is it? Electropolishing, also known as electrochemical polishing, anodic polishing, or electrolytic polishing, is an electrochemical process that removes material from a metallic workpiece, reducing the surface roughness by levelling micro-peaks and valleys, improving the surface finish. It is used to polish and deburr metal parts, as well as make them less reactive. It is often described as the reverse of electroplating.

Typically, the work-piece is immersed in an acidic bath. Electric current is passed through the work-piece which causes metal on the surface to dissolve in the bath. When done correctly, the protruding parts of the surface dissolve faster than the recesses, creating a smoother surface.

Benefits as far as the Ash Can and Ash Basket are concerned are a clean, smooth surface that is more resistant to corrosion than regular stainless steel. This is done by removing iron from the surface and which enhances the chromium/nickel content for the most superior form of corrosion resistance for stainless steel.

Installation
Installation is easy. First remove the charcoal grate from your MiniMax cooker. People frequently ask if they should leave the charcoal grate in the cooker when using a basket. You can, but life is so much simpler if you remove it altogether. When you shake your basket, the ash can fall directly into the bottom of your cooker, or in this case, into the Kick Ash Can. Below are photos showing the MiniMax with the charcoal grate in place and then removed.

Once you have removed the original charcoal grate, you can then set the Kick Ash Can into place. It simply sits down in the bottom of the firebox. It has a hole in the side, which you must line up with the MiniMax's lower vent. Once the Ash Can is in place, you can then set the Ash Basket on top of the can with the handles to the left and right and you are done!

Using The Kick Ash Can and Basket
Using the Kick Ash Can and Basket are as simple as the installation was. Before your next cook, you can lift the ash basket a few inches and give it a shake. All the loose ash will fall into the ash can. When you want to empty the ash out of the cooker, wait for everything to cool throughly then simply set the basket down outside the cooker. Grab the ash can from inside by the opening and lift it out so you can dump the ash as you see fit.

One word of caution, if you are one those who feel the need to do clean out burns, remove the ash basket from the cooker before doing the high temperature burn. The basket will degrade if subjected to extreme heat.
