Frankly, the casters used on Kamado Joe carts are less than stellar. Within a few years, the
tire crumbles and breaks off, leaving only the hub. (You can clearly see the problem in the
photo above.) The Kamado Joe Facebook group is littered
with posts about this issue and asking how to replace them with a better caster.
Here's what you need to know when selecting a replacement caster:
- The caster stem must be 12mm (yeah, it's metric) in diamter.
- The threads on the caster stem must be 1.75 TPI.
- You will need a 19mm thin wrench to get at that nut that is located at the base of the
caster stem.
- As long as you are at it, you might want to get casters with 4" or 5" wheels. They
will roll more smoothly than the original casters.
We have provided Amazon links to some possible selections. The casters labeled "Cheap Casters"
have been recommended a lot by people in the Kamado Joe Facebook group. However, we are skeptical because
they use the same tire and hub construction as the lousy Kamado Joe casters. The casters labeled "Good Casters"
are solid rubber wheels and should last forever. And finally we have provided a link to a set of metric thin
wrenches that we have used. (You may also be able to find a single wrench if you don't want to buy a set.)
