Traditional Sangria
Adapted from a recipe by Sarah Jay

This is the traditional Sangria which you will find everywhere. See below for another take on this cooling drink.

Ingredients

  • 1 bottle dry red wine, preferably a Spanish Rioja
  • 1/4 Cup sugar
  • 2 Tbsp Rum
  • Juice of 1 orange
  • 1 orange, washed and sliced thin
  • 1 lemon, washed and sliced thin
  • 1 peach, washed and sliced thin
  • 1 stick cinnamon
  • 1-1/2 Cups club soda, chilled
  • Ice


Instructions

Pour the wine into a large pitcher. Add the sugar, rum and orange juice, stirring until the sugar dissolves. Add the fruit and the cinnamon stick. Chill overnight. When ready to serve, add the ice cubes and club soda.



Sangria, How The Locals Do It

When we were in Spain, this is how many of the locals prepared Sangria.

Ingredients

  • 1 bottle dry red wine, preferably a Spanish Rioja
  • 2-liter bottle of orange soda, chilled
  • 3/4 Cup sugar
  • 1/2 Cup Cointreau
  • Sliced lemon, chopped bananas, sliced apples, sliced peaches
  • Ice


Instructions

Combine the wine, orange soda, sugar and Cointreau in a large pitcher, stirring until the sugar dissolves. Add fruit and allow to chill overnight. When ready to serve add ice.
