The SMOBOT Temperature Controller

The SMOBOT App

SMOBOT has an App available for iOS and Android. Here we show you the basic functions of the iOS version of the App which allows you both monitor and control your SMOBOT controller if you have registered at mysmobot.smobot.com.

This first screen appears when you start up the App. Simply enter your credentials and you will be signed in. After signing in, you are presented with the App Dashboard. Here you can see all the same basic information that you have on the web page dashboard.
If you tap on the small icon next to the pit set point, you will be taken to a screen where you can alter the set point. Here you can alter the pit set point either by tapping the "-" or "+" buttons, or by tapping the value of the set point to get a keyboard where you can enter a specific value.
Tapping on the bell in the center of the screen will take you another screen wheere you can set alerts. Here you can set alerts for the pit temperature or the two food probes.
If you do set an alarm, the value of the alarm will show up just below the current reading for that probe. In this case, we have set an alarm for 80 degrees on the Food 1 probe. When an alarm is triggered, you will get a notification complete with sound effects on your phone.

There are a few features that are present in the web page interface and missing from the App which we feel would be useful:

  • End a cook/start a new cook.
  • Give a cook a name.
  • Add notes to a cook.
  • An indication that a pit alarm has been set.
A feature which is missing both from the App and the web page interface is the ability to switch the controller from Manual to Auto or Auto to Manual. We are told this feature should be coming soon. When you first power on the SMOBOT, the controller will usually be in Manual Mode. (The only exception to this is if the controller was in Auto Mode and the damper was plugged in when you last turned the controller off, AND the damper is plugged in when you turn the controller back on.) Needless to say if you forget to turn on Auto Mode and then go to the hardware store, you can't remedy the situation without having to go home. The ability to remotely switch the SMOBOT controller into Auto Mode will be a welcome addition.

Another thing we'd like to see added to both interfaces is to add the damper setting to the graph so you can monitor the damper. Perhaps this is just the tester in us wishing, but other controllers provide this information in their graphing function and we find it useful.

And finally, support for multiple SMOBOT controllers is missing. At the moment, you must create a separate account for each controller. Obviously, you'd like to have all your controllers under a single account so you can manage them all from one web page or App. We are told that this is coming.
