New App Features
When the Combustion Predictive Thermometer first shipped, the App was incredibly simple and lacking in features. However,
Combustion promised the App would be updated and indeed it has.
Standard Mode
Standard mode is essentially what you saw in the original App. All that is displayed is the core, surface and ambient temperatures.
When you first start the App, it listens for probes.
When a probe appears, you will see its data displayed in standard mode.
Graph
You can now display a graph of your temperatures. Notice that each temperature is shown in a different color. You can tap on the colored circles below the graph to add or remove the plot of that particular temperature.
To add the graph to the display, tap on the three dots and you will see a dropdown menu appear. Tap on "Show graph".
A graph is now added to the display.
Tenths of a Degree
You can now also display temperatures to a tenth of a degree.
To show temperatures to a tenth of a degree, tap on the three dots and you will see a dropdown menu appear. Tap on "Show tenths °".
Temperatures will now be shown with tenths of a degree.
Advanced Mode
Advanced mode allows you to see the temperature readings from all 8 sensors. And like before, you can tap on the colored circles to add or remove individual plots.
Again, tap on the three dots and then select "Advanced mode" from the dropdown menu.
Now you get to see the temperature readings from all 8 sensors! And again, you can tap on the colored circles to add or remove individual plots.
Debug Mode
Debug mode is probably nothing more than a curiosity for the average user, but there certainly is a lot of interesting looking data there.
Tap the three dots and select "Debug mode" from the dropdown menu.
You are presented with a long list of data items probably most useful to the developers.
Access To Raw Data
The original App did not provide you with any access to the probe's raw data. Well, you now have access to a plethora of raw data.
Tap the three dots and select "Export CSV" from the dropdown menu.
Your phone's dialog for sending mails and texts will open.
You will receive a .CSV file that looks like this. We realize it is hard to see, but there's a lot there:
Cooking With The New App
In order to show you how things look in the new App while actually cooking a piece of meat, we cooked a beef Eye of Round to 130°
and captured a few screen shots during the process.
This is shortly after we placed the probe in the meat. You can see the temperatures drop. |
Here we switched to Advanced Mode. Check out all the different sensors. |
Back to Standard Mode, you can see that the App is now predicting the finish time. |
Getting closer. |
Here is what all 8 sensors have recorded throughout the entire cook. |
And here is what happens when your meat is done. |
Summary
When Combustion first brought out the Predictive Thermometer, they promised improvements in the future and they have
certainly delivered. The new Range-Extending Booster gives you a cheaper alternative to the Display for a Bluetooth
repeater. Also, the Booster will charge and maintain your probe, so less fiddling with a charging cable and no replacing
dead batteries.
In addition to the new Booster, they have introduced MeatNet™ to give you more range and flexibility with your devices.
And finally they have added a host of welcome new features to their App, bringing it up to the level of most other
truly wireless thermometers.
But probably what matters most to users is the range and reliabilty of the Bluetooth connection and the accuracy of cook time predictions. Frankly, Combustion is the market leader in this regard. No other truly wireless meat thermometer that we have tried has performed as well as the Combustion Predictive Thermometer. It's an expensive option, but you get what you pay for. The only thing missing from Combustion's line of products is a Wi-Fi bridge that would let you view your thermometer from anywhere you have access to Wi-Fi. We have to wonder if that will be next.
