ThermoPro Twin TempSpike
Wireless Meat Thermometer

Predicting Time Remaining and Rest Time
Well, first of all, let's point out that the TempSpike App does not deal with rest time. It predicts when the meat temperature will reach your target, period. So you will need to set a lower target and guess at a resting time on your own. That said, the TempSpike does try to provide an estimate of when the meat will be done. We monitored this prediction throughout the cook of a bottom round roast. So, how did it do? As you can see from this graph, not very well:

Here are some of the highlights (or lowlights):

So, the predicting cook time feature is terribly inaccurate and isn't really of much use. Predictions were all over the place and just not very helpful. In any event, here's how the roast turned out:

Connectivity Information
We briefly touched on this before, but we will emphasize it here. The probes communicate with the Booster via Bluetooth and the Booster can communicate with your smart device also only through Bluetooth. Obviously, the reach of the Booster is only as far as Bluetooth will take you. Without a Wi-Fi bridge function that other truly wireless meat thermometers have, you cannot monitor your cooks from just anywhere.

Usage Notes And Warnings

Problems We Encountered

Probe Ambient Sensor Accuracy Issues: The accuracy of the ambient sensors in boiling water was the worst we have seen so far in testing any brand of these truly wireless meat probes. We have to wonder if this is in part responsible for the next problem we saw.

Cook Time Predictions Highly Inaccurate: As we detailed above, the predictions of the cook time were highly inaccurate, enough so to be essentially useless.

Conclusions
The ThermoPro Twin TempSpike looks like an attractive option at first. At least at the time of this writing, ThermoPro seems to have most of their products heavily discounted on their website so you might be tempted to buy one as a low cost alternative to several other higher-priced brands. It does come in a reasonably nice package with two probes, display, Bluetooth repeater and rechargeable battery all built in to the Booster. However, once you get your hands on one and start using it, the discounted low cost choice may not in fact be the best choice. And at the regular price, it certainly is not a very good choice. You have to use it to find out all the pluses and minuses and we found a few. Here's a summary of what we did and did not like about the Twin TempSpike when we tested it:
Things We Like:

  • Impressive Bluetooth range with the implementation of Bluetooth 5.2.
  • Relatively fast charging.
  • Booster shows both the charge level and progress for both base and probes.
  • Booster has internal rechargeable battery.
  • Booster uses USB-C, not micro-USB.
  • Booster battery lasts a long time between charges. After all our testing, the battery indicator still showed full with no recharging.
  • Probes are waterproof.
  • Probes are clearly labeled.
  • Probes have easy grip handle.
  • Probes can survive temperatures up to 636°F (330°F).
  • Things We Didn't Like:

  • Booster display not particularly easy to read.
  • Booster has no built-in stand. You must set it on its side, making the display hard to read.
  • Ambient temperature sensors are not very accurate.
  • There is no way to "calibrate" the temperature sensors by specifying an offset to be used when reporting temperatures.
  • Probe shaft diameter is huge at 6.5mm compared to Combustion 4.8mm and MEATER 2 Plus 5mm.

  • Only two temperature sensors when other brands are setting the standard with 4, 5 and even 8 sensors.
  • No Wi-Fi bridge, so limited to Bluetooth range.

  • No Cloud function, so graph history is limited to what can be stored on the phone. If you move your device to another phone, you lose all your history.

  • No support for Alexa/Siri.

  • Extremely limited selection for meats. 9 types of meat are supported, but no cuts.

  • The cook graphing is separate from cook management. You have to start graphing manually instead of a graph being produced as a part of your cook.
  • Graphs contain neither which probe is being graphed, nor the time and date of the cook.
  • If you change the target temperature mid-cook while collecting data, the graph shows the new temperature for the whole cook, rather than showing the change.
  • If you pause data collection, the live graph will show the gap. If you stop collecting data and display the graph from the history, the App fills in the missing data.
  • The probe/cook screen doesn't show the elapsed time on the cook. You must start data collection and then go view the graph.
  • Screen management on iPhones is buggy. The Welcome screen says "Welco...". Labels overlay buttons. Buttons are halfway off the screen. The x-coordinate labels on the graph overlay each other as the graph auto-scales the display.
  • Customer support not responsive. Our two simple questions remain unanswered after 10 days.
  • The ability to predict cook times is the worst of any truly wireless probe we have ever reviewed.
  • So, as convenient a little package as the ThermoPro Twin TempSpike is, you might find it isn't the best truly wireless meat probe for you. You should definitely shop around and read some reviews before making a decision.
