Commentary

We had used a couple of bags of Real Flavor and remembered it being pretty good lump for the money. This bag confirms our memories. The lump is pretty good size, not too much little stuff. It is mostly lumber mill scrap and other pieces of wood. No tongue and groove flooring in this stuff. The smell was a mild smokey smell, much like the Big Green Egg and Barbecues Galore lumps. We wish it had a few really big pieces in the bag, but other than that, this is a very good charcoal and gets our Highly Recommended rating.

UPDATE: We have been informed by a reader who called Royal Oak that Real Flavor is made by Royal Oak. Allegedly, Real Flavor is exactly the same charcoal as that which is packaged as Royal Oak. For more information, read our review of Royal Oak lump charcoal.

"If you've never cooked with Real Flavor Lump Charcoal, you'll be surprised at the difference it can make with your next cookout! Real Flavor starts easily and reaches cooking temperatures faster than charcoal briquets, which means less time standing around waiting to grill. It also burns with a much more intense heat than conventional briquets, making it perfect for steaks and other meats tha require searing."

"Real Flavor Lump Charcoal

Uniquely shaped chunks of 100% charred woods, including oak, maple, hickory, and other hardwoods.
No chemicals added, for more real wood flavor.
Lights faster and burns hotter than charcoal briquets"

"VS. Regular Charcoal Briquets

Often a blend of woods and fillers which are ground and compressed into a briquet shape.
Can contain chemical residues that affect taste.
Longer lasting heat for lengthy cooking times."

"Grill Safety

Never Grill Indoors.
Never Leave Grill Unattended.
Keep Children And Pets Away From Hot Grills.

NOTE: Real Flavor Lump Charcoal will often spark more than charcoal briquets. Use caution when moving or spreading coals. Use flame-retardant, insulated mitss and long-handled utensils when moving hot coals, charcoal grates, cooking grills or when handling food. Make sure the grill area is well away from fences, overhangs, and shrubs that could ignite from sparks or flare-ups."

"Tips For Safe Food Handling

Thaw frozen meats in the refrigerator, not at room temperatures.
Never baste cooked meats with used marinade. Discard used marinade.
Use a clean platter for cooked meats. Platters used for raw meats can contaminate cooked foods with bacteria."

"For Best Grilling Results:

Watch food closely. Lump charcoal cooks faster than regular briquets. use a meat thermometer to determine when food is done. Real Flavor Lump Charcoal may burn too hot to properly prepare faster cooking foods like seafood, poultry, or vegetables."

"Helpful Hints:

Apply oil lightly to cooking grill to prevent meat from sticking and trim excess fat off meats for less flare-up.
Marinite meat in refrigerator for up to 24 hours before cooking. To retain juices, salt just prior to cooking. Keep thinner cuts cooler to help retain a juicy interior.
To avoid burning sauces, apply to meat toward the end of the cooking time."

Lighting Instructions

"Easy Start Lighting Instructions:

Using Lighter Fluid:

Never add lighter fluid after starting fire!
Never use gasoline to light a fire!

1. Remove cooking grill and stack Real Flavor Lump Charcoal into a pile on the charcoal rack. Use enough charcoal so that when coals are spread out, they extend a couple of inches past the food you're grilling.
2. Sprinkle charcoal with lighter fluid. Don't drench lump charcoal as you would briquets. Allow 30 seconds to one minute for the fluid to soak in.
3. Light charcoal in several places with a match or a butane charcoal lighter.
4. Wait 10-15 minutes until coals are ashed over. Spread out charcoal before grilling. Add more Real Flavor Lump Charcoal to the fire as needed.

Fluid-Free Lighting Alternatives:

Crumple several sheets of newpaper and place under the charcoal grate. Replace grate and add Real Flavor Lump Charcoal. open grill vents and ignite paper. If using a chimney starter, fill and light according to manufacturer's instructions."
