Commentary

Locating Big Green Egg's Brazilian Eucalyptus Lump Charcoal proved to be a bit challenging, but we finally located a stash at Triangle Ace Hardware just off NC54 in Durham, North Carolina. As an aside, this dealer had one of the more extensive arrays of Big Green Egg merchandise that we have come across. If you are in the area and need something Big Green Egg, pay them a visit. (By the way, they don't know us from Adam and weren't aware who was poking around. We just thought we'd pass on the fact that they are quite well stocked.) So we grabbed a bag and hurried home to do this review.

This charcoal is not the first charcoal made from eucalyptus that we have reviewed, but it is not a common wood for charcoal making in the US. Some folks mistakenly think that the wood of the eucalyptus tree smells like the oil found in the leaves and nuts of the eucalyptus tree, but it does not. It turns out that eucalyptus is a great wood for charcoal, as you will see. This charcoal comes to us from Brazil, so we have provided you with a map to the right.

So, how did it do? Well, when we dumped it out for sorting and inspection, we found a charcoal with no scrap, no funny items, and no uncarbonized wood. We found a charcoal with a very nice size distribution. No monster logs, but over 83% of the bag was large and medium sized pieces. A relatively small amount of small sized pieces and a very small amount of chips and dust. The 3.7% by weight of chips and dust was Very Low compared to other brands.

Large 7.6 pounds 40.6%
Medium 8.0 pounds 42.9%
Small 2.4 pounds 12.8%
Chips/Dust 0.7 pounds 3.7%

Total 18.7 pounds

Moving on to our lighting test, Big Green Egg Brazilian lump took 4.5 sheets of newspaper to get a fire going in a chimney starter. This is Average compared to other brands. The smoke is moderately strong wood smoke. There was no sparking or popping when the wood was burning in the chimney.

From there we go to our maximum temperature test. This charcoal burned at a scorching 1102°F which ranks it Very High compared to all brands. Again there was no sparking or popping while the charcoal was coming up to temperature and the fire spread quite fast.

Next up are the burn time and ash production tests. This charcoal burned quite a long time and ranked High compared to other brands. When lighting the charcoal with a MAP/Pro torch, there was very little sparking and no popping. Of course, regardless of our results, always exercise caution when using a torch of any type to light lump charcoal. Finally, the charcoal produced relatively little ash ranking it Very Low compared to other brands.

So there you have it. Big Green Egg Brazilian Eucalyptus lump charcoal. A little hard to start, but once it gets going the fire spreads fast and burns very hot. It burns a long time and leaves very little ash. Combine that with the excellent distribution of sizes with very little waste in the bottom of the bag, we give it our Highly Recommended rating.
