Commentary

This is a good basic charcoal which comes from South America. It has a mild pleasant smoke. Much like the Kamado lump, it almost has a perfume sort of smell to it. The size of the pieces was no worse than most of the brands we have reviewed, although as dense as this wood is, we were surprised to see how much of the bag consisted of small chips. It took an about an average effort to light and it burned hot enough to get the Big Green Egg up to at least 700 degrees. One mildly disturbing aspect of this charcoal is its propensity to spark when burning hot with a good draft. Sparks popped out of the bottom vent of the Big Green Egg as well as flying out the top. When cooking at 325 degrees, there were no sparks. Keeping this in mind, this is a good charcoal with a pleasant smokey smell that we think many folks will find adds a pleasant taste to their food. The lighting instructions on the bag leave a lot to be desired, but thankfully, most cooks don't need them. We give this charcoal our Above Average rating.

Note: We have had two independant reports that this lump smelled of ammonia when burned. We did not encounter this smell in the slightest and cannot comment on the reports.

Another Note: As you can see, this lump comes in two different bags. The red and yellow bag is sold by Wal*Mart. We contacted B&B and they told us that both types of packaging contain identical lump charcoal.
