Commentary

Whoa! We got some big chunks of wood here! We suspect this is mesquite due to it's origin (Mexico) and the amount of sparking when it burns. Probably 90% of the box was usable. Lump in boxes is a nice concept. You can stack them up in the garage. Also, shipping lump in boxes should protect the lump from being crushed and arriving in lots of little chips. A bit of the large piece wasn't converted totally to charcoal, but we think that's a small problem. Since this was one of the very first lump charcoals we reviewed, we didn't conduct all the tests that we now normally run. Based on our memory of the charcoal and comparing what we do know about it to later mesquite charcoals that we tested we give this charcoal our Average rating:
