86. Very poor product. Steaks tasted very bad -- left a very sooty taste when used. Not impressed at all. My wife was so disappointed in how the steaks tasted she wanted me to throw out my kimodo grill thinking it was the grill's fault -- till I changed to Royal Oak and from then on had fantastic tasting steaks. (01/28/15) (24.214.58.84)

85. I have been a Best of the West user for years and I find your reviews to be completely wrong. Not sure where you purchased this bag, but this package has not been used for at least 10 years. It makes me question your attention to detail. (01/21/15) (71.243.220.128)

81. I used to get this at Smart and Final stores in california but the quality is so bad I will no longer buy it. one 40lb bag had part of the tree trunk that was unburnt, weighed like 10 lbs itself. way too much dust and crumbs. (11/17/14) (76.127.86.205)

75. I've never seen the Mesquite product, but the BotW Natural Oak Lump Charcoal is terrific. It's loaded with big and medium sized pieces, has a very small percentage of unusable material (dust, tiny pieces, or un-carbonized) and it's OAK. We buy it at the Do-It (DIY) Center in SoCal. 72. The first half of the 20lb bag was great. Starts fast burns long. The bottom of the bag had more rock and tiny pieces than B&B. Overall not a bad product. (04/19/14) (74.197.72.205)

60. The good: High heat, good for searing steaks, long burn time. The bad: Huge variation in size, eatimate one third of the bag is unuseable. Long time to light in Weber Perfomer Platinum. Somewhere between glowing flying Rice Krispies and the 4th of July; had to run for cover at one point. Huge ash load at the end. Purchased one bag 7/28/13. The rest of the bag is in the trash (07/29/13) (72.220.135.62)

59. There is a great deal of waste (too much fine) in the bag. The very large chunks are problematic can be barbecuing a small amount. It starts easily, but burns fast. I don't get the mesquite flavor in the meats that I do from other brands. (07/05/13) (70.123.124.96)

58. Liked the large chucks but was hard to light did last along time (05/12/13) (71.246.42.81)

57. Good large chunks. Burns very very very hot. Lots of ash. White powder residue after burn. $7 for 20lb bag It's not too bad, I will use it again. I don't mind the excessive ash. (02/04/13) (108.82.117.130)

56. Extreme amount of fine. Balance was large. Little medium. OK if you wanted to throw out half of the bag. (01/27/13) (96.33.87.120)

55. I have found this product to be better if bought from Sams Club. Sams sells this charcoal in a 20lb bag. The bags seem to contain larger pieces. I would love to see a naked review on this product purchased at Sams. (10/19/12) (99.0.58.129)

54. I bought a large bag at Sam's Club. It contained numerous large "logs". Contrary to the Whiz's test it was difficult to light and did not burn well. I will not purchase again. (05/28/12) (68.229.230.126)

53. I use as a specialty charcoal adding a few lumps when I want some mesquite smoke flavor especially to fish or southwest style dishes. This is not my choice for an everyday charcoal. (04/04/12) (166.249.131.14)

52. This is an average charcoal. The plus side is it lights fairly easy and goes to a reasonable temp. My complaint is when you put a fan to it for searing steaks you get a 5 foot wall of sparks. this charcoal sparks too excessively for a hot burn. If you are cooking low and slow, it performs much better. (03/10/12)

51. Bought mine at Sam's Club. Large chunks, burns hot, pops a lot of spark at first. Good clean burn, for the price I like it. (10/14/11)

50. Tried a small bag of this because of their boast on the bag that it was recommended by The Naked Whiz - before I read the review of course. Two cooks later I cleaned it out of the Egg and tossed the remaining bag in the garbage. I had a good laugh after reading the review on this site - terrible terrible terrible! (08/05/11)

49. This company not only they have a lousy product, it is fake. It is NOT Mesquite as they claim. Sure they put some Mesquite, and then add serious junk wood there. I called them once and told them I will challenge them with their claim of 100% mesquite. Just like I expected, they told me if you are not happy with what we have, dont buy our product. That was the best advice I got from them, I simply never bought their junk since and started buying real 100% mesquite charcoal. You dont need anyone to tell you if the charchoal is mesquite or not, just burn it and see how it burns. If it acts like fireworks, and heat doesnt stay, it is NOT mesquite. Why cant people just do honest business, and stop cheating consumers. Just tell them what you are selling them and what they expect, HONESTLY. (07/19/11)

48. Produces more ash than royal oak. Very large pieces in bag that must be broken up to even fit in my chimney. Sparking is about the same as royal oak (06/30/11)

47. Purchased a 40# bag at Sams. The whole bag was very large pieces that had to be broken up. This stuff pops and sparks so bad that it is unusable and unsafe. Sparks were flying 6 feet above my chimney starter and pieces were being shot out to a 6 ft radius on the patio. I will be returning this to Sam's and will not buy it again. (06/12/11)

46. 40 lbs Smart & Final bag provides a great number of HUGE chunks at a great price. Who cares if they are too big for you, hit them with a hammer. After paying $13 for this bag, I don't care if it is 25% dust. Good burning real wood lump, not lumber factory rejects like Royal Oak and Cowboy. Sparks and pops with the best of them but that's par for the course. (05/31/11)

45. Found a yellow plastic funnel in my bag. Huge pieces of charcoal. I actually thought it was pretty good. Did a 20 hour Boston Butt cook and still had usable charcoal left. Temp stayed steady the whole time. (04/28/11)

44. This is my first experience using lump charcoal, so I can only compare it to the regular Kingsford briquettes I've always used. This definitely burns hotter and longer, with less ash. And I'm very impressed by the mesquite flavor! However, 25% of the bag was two huge pieces, and 50% was dust and tiny bits. I will definitely try lump charcoal again, but will look for a different brand with better quality control. (02/08/11)

43. links/go.txt;25;25 (01/15/11)

42. Got a 40 pound bag at Sam's Club for $15. Several pieces were the size of logs. Good burn time with lots of ash. (11/04/10)

41. I purchased a 40# bag from Sam's. It contained 6# of fines, and 17# of very large pieces unusable in my cooker. Though the burn time/ash/flavor were good, I will not be buying another bag. (06/03/10)

40. crap half a bag of powder get control of your product!!!! (05/08/10)

39. comment3, (01/10/10)

38. comment6, (12/31/09)

37. Sam's Club carries this in 40 lb bags and so far I really like it. Nice big pieces and burns well. I would say the pooping and sparking is below average for most lump charcoals. (11/30/09)

36. Over priced with a large amount of small and dust! (09/08/09)

35. Very nice site! (08/07/09)

34. Very nice site! (08/02/09)

33. I have been useing this brand for about 10 years, tes sometimes u get the "off" bag thats got a bunch of small stuff but overall they have a great medium size constantly in my humble opion. as for ash the regular briqettes that u can get are all ash also.! but heres the main difference I love it, I can close off the grill and put out the coals and reuse 20 to 35 % try that with the normal stuff! fast hot and tastes great. (05/18/09)

32. I've been using this stuff for years because the price is good around here : $15 for 40lb. Your test is exactly what I have experienced. (02/11/09)

31. I bought two 6.6 pound bags of this when it was on sale at Kroger for $2.79 a bag. I'm pleased with the performance and price. There were three large pieces in the first bag I had to split into smaller pieces, but no big deal. Nice mesquite bouquet, especially from the larger peices that weren't really fully carbonized. Slight sparking when starting to light, nothing extreme. The local Sam's Club is now carrying the 40 pound bags of this charcoal at $13.87 per bag, a bargain for lump charcoal in this area! (11/04/08)

30. The local SMart & Final has huge bags, 40 lbs I think, and the price is good. I have not seen any of the un-carbonized pieces you mentioned in your review, and it's clearly made from real wood instead of scrap lumber. But there are too many huge pieces which have to be broken up, and lots of dust and small particles. The last bag I had had a ton of unusable stuff like that. So I agree, the quality isn't very good. However, it is very cheap and food cooked with it tastes great. (08/11/08)

29. The 40lb. bag from Smart & final has a lot more medium sized pieces in my experience. I get about an 8 hour cook in my Spicewine cooker with about 10 lbs. A lot less ash than Kingsford or Rancher. (04/02/08)

28. 3/29/08: Got it at Krogers $5.49 for 6.6lb bag. Nice big pieces, lit easily, and burned hot. The smoke had a strong aroma. I didn't have any sparking or popping that some have mentioned. Ok for grilling beef or chicken but I wouldn't want to use it for smoking pork. (03/29/08)

27. Huge variation in lump size, easy to light, got hot fast but gone quickly, cheap price

26. This bag is pretty great to use because it gives my meat a lot of flavor, great for a little smoking and I can't fit in my tiny Weber's. The start of the wood is quite fast, but later in the end, it gives a few pop of sparks. The sparks nothing really serious, and I would recommend people trying it.

25. easy to find and pretty cheap as far as price.although i dont like the way it smells, and it burns up fairly fast.

24. Good product, but not available any more in my area, darn it.I like it for the rich smoke flavor it adds to foods.

23. I've used about 100 lbs of it and have no complaints. I buy 40 lb. bags at Smart & Final, $13.

22. Excellent product!! The resulting mesquite flavor in the ribs was delicious. I've been using this product for over a year now.

21. sparks popping left and right - better than cowboy.

20. No longer a "product of mexico" It was taken over by Argentina. Ready in 12 minutes, held 190F for 3.2 hrs. Little dust nothing uncarborized.09-04-06

19. No longer a "product of mexico" I was taken over by Argentina. Ready in 12 minutes, held 190F for 3.2 hrs. Little dust nothing uncarborized.09-04-06

18. VERY HARD TO LITE.

17. Mostly huge (6 inch or larger) chunks--if you like that kind of thing.

16. Rocks, bits of plastic and twine were shot through the bag. Created so much soot even on high heat that this is the first and only charcoal that jammed my Kamado's top vent.

15. You,ve got to be careful as sometime Best of the West subsututes lump charcaol from other countries in Ralphs instead of what they regularly carry

14. I have been using this lump regularly for the last three weeks. After using many other lumps, i have concluded that this is the best bang for the buck. Great flavor, great burn, very little amount of tiny pieces in the bag, and smells awesome.

13. I get this in a 40lb bag for 13.95. This is less than half the price of BGE lump. Don't know why someone says lots of ash, I found less than any I've tried so far. Good flavor, burns hot, and the bag is plastic lined which prevents tearing.

12. Sparks a little. Nothing bad, just be careful with it. Smells great. I like the larger pieces in the bag. Burns a bit fast though. I use it along with kingsford and a little wood chips. Makes for great smoked chicken breasts! and pork butts too!

11. Kroger sells it and its better than Kingsford. It sparks WAY too much and has tried to set my deck on fire twice. To crackle-pop for me

10. Lots of ash, bur time was very short. The worst lump I've used yet.

9. 40 lbers from Smart and Final in Socal. I use this for smoking pork butts and ribs, always with great flavor. I find a lot of chips and dust (15%) but the price can't be beat. Lit well and burned well.

8. Good price and available locally. (About the only thing that is available locally) Sparks when lighting, but lights fast. Burns too fast, especially when cooking butts. Overall not bad.

7. $8.99 for 20lb. at Tom Thumb in DFW area. Sparky when lighting. Good size distribution.

6. Is good for Grilling burns to quick for long sessions. I get 40lb bags at Smart & Final in Ca.

5. Lit okay & burned okay, but the last bag I used smelled like a plastic baggie burning in the BGE once I lit it.

4. Consistant is a good description. Fiesta Store in Houston used to carry the 20lb bag. Last visit all they had was 6 lbs

3. Best of the west is ok, but I wouldn't call it the best. My main gripe is that it comes in extraordinarily small bags, and I can barely get 2 bbq'ings out of it in a #7 kamado. Flavor, temp, and cleanliness are comparable to Lazarri's, which I can easily find in large bags, so I tend to opt for Lazarris. But Best of the west is perfectly acceptable in a pinch.

2. In additon to burning hot & clean, I like the aroma and color that this imparts.

1. I get the most consistant results with this stuff.
